Welcome to the Penn State Augmentative and Alternative Communication Website!

About AAC

Did you know that there are approximately two million people in the United States who have significant speech and/or writing impairments and need to use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)?

Benefits of AAC

Without access to functional speech, these individuals are severely restricted in their participation in educational, vocational, home and community activities. AAC offers the potential to enhance communication and increase participation. AAC includes gestures, signs, communication boards with photographs or line drawings, alphabet boards, and computer-based assistive technologies.
